Are You Guilty of Believing These False Narratives? Over the years in my Leadership and Executive Coaching Practice, I’ve found that there are five leadership MYTHS that continue to limit talented professionals, and it’s time we challenge them.
Too many capable people hold back because they believe something about leadership that simply isn’t true.
#1 – Leaders are born, not made: Leadership is not a genetic gift. It is developed. Self-Awareness, Communication, Resilience, and Strategic Thinking are skills. And skills can be learned. Growth-minded leaders are built through experience, feedback, and intentional development.
#2 – Leaders must have all the answers: The strongest leaders don’t pretend to know everything. They ask better questions. They invite perspective. They leverage the knowledge/intelligence around them. Humility and curiosity build credibility faster than certainty ever will.
#3 – Leadership is about power and control: Command-and-control leadership is outdated. Sustainable leadership is about influence, alignment, and empowerment. Real authority is earned through trust — not imposed through position.
#4 – Extroverts make better leaders: Leadership is not a personality contest. Introverted leaders often excel because they listen deeply, think strategically, and respond thoughtfully. Effective leadership is about impact — not volume.
#5 – Leadership comes with a title: Leadership is behavior, not hierarchy. You can lead from any seat, by taking initiative, modeling accountability, and influencing outcomes. Titles don’t create leaders. Actions do.
If you believe any of these myths, you may be unintentionally limiting your own leadership potential or the potential of others on your team. The question isn’t whether you have the traits to lead. The real question is: Are you willing to develop them?
