What Makes Employees Promotable vs. Passed Over / Overlooked?
As an Author, Keynote Speaker, Leadership & Executive Coach – my clients are often seeking MY guidance and expertise on how to improve their leadership effectiveness, executive presence, and business acumen – to rapidly grow professionally within their organization.
With that in mind, let’s take a few minutes to shed light on those attributes that make you PROMOTABLE versus OVERLOOKED and often passed over for promotion. So, let’s start with those characteristics that will get you NOTICED, PROMOTED, AND OVERLOOKED, if not demoted.
What Gets You Noticed, Promoted, and Overlooked
NOTICED – Now when you see fellow team members moving up the career ladder, typically it’s because their leader or senior executive has NOTICED their professional appearance, eloquence, approachable demeanor, positive attitude. They’ve also noticed that the person is a team player, possesses personal leadership, and intelligence.
PROMOTED – After being noticed, what often leads to getting PROMOTED is competence, taking initiative, being teachable (otherwise known as teachability). Also, self-accountability, trustworthiness, persuasiveness, and resourcefulness.
DEMOTED – And employees who demonstrate these lazy behaviors are often OVERLOOKED, if not DEMOTED. Things like unreliability, unprofessional behavior, disorganization, incompetence, poor attitude, and definitely uncooperativeness.
Now, I’d like to leave you with a little more detail, and action steps based on my seven professional qualities and skills that promotable employees possess.
ONE – Strong Work Ethic: Remember, promotable employees are dedicated, reliable, and willing to go above and beyond what is required. And, they consistently meet or exceed performance expectations, taking initiative to improve work processes and procedures.
TWO – Leadership Skills: Employees who are promotable often possess strong leadership skills, such as the ability to inspire and motivate others, communicate effectively, and make sound decisions. And, they are able to take on additional responsibilities and manage teams effectively.
THREE – Adaptability: Promotable employees are adaptable and flexible, able to handle change and adapt to new situations. They are open to feedback and willing to learn new skills and techniques.
FOUR – Positive Attitude: Employees who are promotable maintain a positive attitude, even in challenging or stressful situations. Why? Because they approach problems with a can-do attitude and are solution oriented.
FIVE – Professionalism: Promotable employees exhibit a high level of professionalism, including strong communication skills, good work habits, and the ability to work well with others. And of course, they are reliable, punctual, and respectful of others.
SIX – Technical Skills: Promotable employees possess the technical skills required for the role they are being considered for. They are proficient in relevant software, systems, and processes, and are able to apply their technical knowledge to solve problems and achieve goals.
SEVEN – Initiative: Promotable employees take initiative and demonstrate a willingness to take on new challenges and responsibilities. They are self-motivated and take ownership of their work, seeking out opportunities to contribute to the organization.
In closing, promotable employees are those who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the organization and its goals. They have a proven track record of success, and are considered valuable contributors to the team.
