Do you consider yourself a leader (or executive) who BUILDs or DESTROYs employee engagement, enthusiasm, and retention? Well, studies show that companies with high employee engagement are 22% more profitable.
This should prompt all leaders to encourage engagement and do what’s necessary to help their workforce be more productive. So, if you’re not sure if your leadership actions and behaviors are BUILDING or DESTROYING employee engagement, enthusiasm, and retention – here’s tangible insight to help you decide.
BUILDS
A leader who builds a strong culture works tirelessly to develop their team by PROVIDING continual learning and development opportunities that will strengthen the team’s competence and commitment.
They are generous with their knowledge, regularly sharing relevant information that ensures their team stays aligned and engaged. And they IMMEDIATELY address problematic issues and situations before it gets out of hand, contaminating the morale and enthusiasm of other team members.
DESTROYS
On the other hand, leaders (and executives) who DESTROY work culture UNFORTUNATELY feel that on-going training and professional development are not significant value-adds to the organization’s success.
So employees are left to their own devices to figure out ways to IMPROVE and grow. And, what does this lead to? Well the answer is widespread employee resentment, negativity, and employees feeling that they are NOT valued within the organization.
Leaders that DESTROY also avoid conflict, thinking it will eventually go away. Or, they leave it to employees to resolve the conflict among themselves which (as we know) 90% of the time results in disaster. And they often withhold valuable, meaningful information. OR, misinform employees of important details that could help them grow and excel. Then when things go wrong, these same leader blame it on employee incompetence. Are you kidding me?
And last, leaders (an executives) that build a strong culture delegate new and challenging tasks within their team, to ensure there’s a balance of knowledge, skill, and expertise that will empower the team to achieve greater heights. While leaders who DESTROY see delegation as a THREAT. So their team never has a chance to grow and excel.
